The ACT Legislative Assembly showed bi-partisan support for the Majura Parkway during the Legislative Assembly sitting of 22 June 2011.
Newly elected MLA Dr Chris Bourke, a former RDA ACT Committee member, highlighted that the Parkway was a critical piece of transport infrastructure for national and regional freight.
“Yes, the Parkway would assist in moving Canberrans around the city, but let us not forget its broader benefits. The importance of the Parkway is for national freight and to achieve an economic outcome for Canberra,” Dr Bourke said.
“A key role of the RDA committee is to advocate for projects that will provide economic benefit to the Territory and the surrounding region,” said Robert van Aalst, the Executive Officer of the Regional Development Australia (ACT) Committee.
“The Parkway development would improve traffic flow during peak periods, provide much greater capacity for freight to bypass populated suburbs, and reduce traffic flow on heavily utlised routes such as Northbourne Avenue,” Mr van Aalst said.
“And although the road is solely within the boundary of the ACT, it has freight implications for the surrounding regions, including Queanbeyan, Bungendore, Cooma and beyond and has support from a range of regional stakeholders.”
The RDA (Committee) Southern Inland also supports the development of the Majura Parkway based on its positive impact on regional freight traffic including to and from Queanbeyan, and from the Cooma-Monaro through to Sydney.
