Have your say on the 2021 ABS Census

National consultation on the topics to be included on the 2021 Census is now open and will be available until 30 June 2018 via consult.abs.gov.au.

Please read the ABS publication which provides background information and details on the current topics collected, the initial thinking around topics for the 2021 Census, and guidance on how to participate in the content review process.

In particular you may be interested in reading the initial thinking around the population topic, as well as sex and gender; at this stage some emerging themes that have relevance in our Demography Section space include:

  • The potential of returning the children ever born question back to to a 10 yearly cycle after the 2021 Census.
  • Should the 2021 Census ask about sex, gender or both?
  • Should additional data items such as State of birth and/or town of birth, Country of usual residence 1 year ago and 5 years ago be considered
  • Should the 'children ever born' question be asked of both females and males

The ABS are interested in hearing your thoughts on these and more - and they're happy to compile feedback to pass on. If you would like to discuss the 2021 Census topics, including more information on making a submission, please feel free to make contact.

This is a terrific opportunity to influence the data made available following the 2021 Census, and to ensure that Australia has the information required to inform key decisions.
